Mitch Daniels has a full legislative agenda ahead of him in 2012. But he’s also got a personal to-do list before leaving office. For one thing, he’d like to figure out how to make the Fireplaces in the governor’s office functional. None of the many Fireplaces in the Statehouse work, and Daniels thinks making at least the one that faces the governor’s desk work would be a nice gift for his successor. “When I first came in, I started fooling with it and thought, ‘Darn it,’ ” he said. “I actually the other day said to somebody we ought to make a list of little stuff to get done. . . . One of them would be to light this.” After all, he said, it appears to have a gas jet, to allow a gas-generated flame. “If it wasn’t something ridiculous, I’d pay for it myself,” he said. “It would really help this place.” Another thing Daniels wants to do: Take the Statehouse tour. “I always tell the schoolkids that at the end of this field trip, you will know more about this building than I do,” he said. “One day, I’m going to just block off an hour and take the t
